Collectively, there are people working towards eradicating perinatal disparities by increasing the number of black birth workers, and creating transparency + accountability within the medical obstetrical industrial system. There are incredible medical professionals out there, and at the same time, American obstetrics developed as a for-profit enterprise with a well documented foundation in exploitation of Black and Indigenous pregnant and birthing people’s bodies. The roots of white supremacy are still very present, and the harm perpetuated is indefensible. It is also well documented (even by institutional paragons of the medical system: CDC, NIH, NY State).
